On October 19th, World’s Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ) was represented by its Latin America Front Convener, José Daniel Rodríguez, at an event at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, in Heidelberg (Germany). The meeting focused on "Climate Emergency, Human Rights, and Community of Practice," bringing together individuals from academia and civil society. The purpose was to generate constructive dialogue among actors from the human rights community of practice in Latin America, addressing the intersection between the climate emergency and human rights in Latin America.
José shared the actions and objectives of WYCJ, explaining our efforts to obtain an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding climate change and the obligations of States to protect human rights against its impacts. Additionally, José highlighted the importance of the States in the Americas participating in the advisory procedure before the ICJ and involving young voices in the process. As such, he presented the legal arguments of the Youth Climate Justice Handbook, a document we are distributing to the legal departments of all States.
The event was an opportunity to generate dialogue and explore potential collaborations between various actors committed to tackling climate and human rights challenges in Latin America. It is anticipated that, as a result of this meeting, collaborative initiatives will emerge to strengthen collective action in these critical areas.
